Why You NEED Your Own Grading Technician
Making Sense of Pattern Grading
Pattern grading is basically the backbone of fashion design and production. It’s the process where pattern makers carefully tweak a finished pattern to scale up or down to fit all sorts of body measurements. The ultimate goal? To keep the original style, shape and proportions of a garment intact as you move up or down the size range.
To get there, pattern makers rely on a set of tried and true grading rules. These are guidelines that dictate how much to add or subtract at key points on the pattern. These points might include the bust, waist, hips, shoulders and other critical dimensions that impact the fit and overall look of a garment. By carefully applying these rules, pattern makers can rest assured that each new size stays true to the designer’s vision while still fitting the intended measurements for different sizes.
The grading process is a must for any brand that wants to offer a consistent fit across its size range. Without pattern grading done properly, garments can end up with odd proportions, leading to poor fit and dissatisfied customers. By understanding and implementing precise grading rules, pattern makers can create patterns that work for just about any body type, supporting both inclusivity and quality in the fashion industry.
You Can’t Afford to Skimp on Your Grading Technician
When you’re launching a clothing brand, the fit is what really matters. You might have gorgeous designs, stunning fabrics and a killer brand identity, but if the fit isn’t consistent across your size range, your customers will notice. And they’ll return it.
Professionally graded specs are one of those often-overlooked yet super important stages of fashion production. A grading technician takes a sample size or base size and uses it to create additional sizes, making sure each size maintains the right fit and proportions. When grading is done well, you get a consistent, gorgeous fit from size to size. If it’s done poorly, though, it can be the silent killer of customer satisfaction, brand reputation and profit margins.
In this blog, we’re going to break down why graded specs are non-negotiable, why ‘free factory grading’ is rarely a good idea and how expert grading can be a game-changer for your brand in the long run.
Pattern grading involves adjusting the measurements of finished pattern pieces to create multiple sizes while keeping the original style and proportions intact. Pattern makers use a set of grading rules which tell them how much to add or subtract from specific points on the finished pattern to create different sizes. Some common methods include the slash and spread method, where you literally cut and spread out the pattern pieces to get the desired size, and pattern shifting, where you move the pattern pieces a certain distance. The spread method is a common manual approach, while digital pattern grading is essential for mass production as it allows for efficient and scalable adjustments. The grading process can be done by hand or with digital pattern making software.
Professionally graded spes is one of the most overlooked (yet most important) stages of fashion production. When grading is done well; it creates a consistent, beautiful fit from size to size. If it’s done poorly, it will be the silent killer of your customer satisfaction, brand reputation and profit margins.
In this blog, we break down why graded specs are a non-negotiable, why ‘free factory grading’ is rarely your friend and how expert grading can protect your brand long term.
What Happens When Grading Goes Wrong?
Grading mistakes aren’t always obvious. Sometimes it’s tiny issues that snowball into bigger problems:
- Smaller sizes with oversized shoulders
- Large sizes with tight arms
- Sleeve lengths that don’t match up between sizes
- Necklines that shift around between sizes
- Waistlines not scaling properly
These grading errors can vary depending on garment style, fabric type, or the target customer demographic, so it’s crucial to apply the right grading rules for each situation.
The result? High return rates, negative reviews, confused customers who don’t know what size they are, and costly deadstock. The worst part? Most founders don’t even realise the grading is wrong until after production, when fixing it becomes expensive and time-consuming.
You’ve Got Three Options (Only One Will Protect Your Brand)
1 . Get a professional grading technician to create your pattern grading specs from scratch
This is the gold standard.
By using your approved sample sizes created from a detailed tech pack, our grading technician will:
- Apply the precise grading rules
- Keep proportions spot on across every size
- Protect your fit consistency
- Make sure nothing gets distorted or warped
Going with this option gives you control and eliminates any surprises in production
2 . Let the factory do the grading, but have a professional check and correct the entire size run
For some simple product types, factory grading may be fine; however, you’ll still need to approve the grading rules that the factory has applied. Unless you have a deep understanding of grading, the best practice is to get a professional to check the grading for you, othewise you don’t know what you are approving. This method however; leaves more room for error than getting the grading done whith our grading technician in the first palce, because whilst our technician will check the balance of the grading rules, the grading rules may not have been set up the way we would have done it, and if any errors are detected, you’ll be up for additional time and costs to rectify the issue. Yet, it’s a better than option than going into bulk producion not knowing what you approved.
Our expert grading technician checks every measurement:
- Corrects errors
- Fixes any distortions
- Confirms all sizing logic is consistent
The factory did it fast, but we make sure it’s right.
3. Approve the factory grading without checking (Please don’t do this!)
If you do this, you’re likely to end up with:
- Sizes that are all over the place
- Fit issues that lead to poor reviews
- Collections you struggle to sell
That short-term shortcut ends up costing you far more in the long run. In production, repeated mistakes are expensive, so it’s always better to get the review right from the start.
Just How Much Does Professional Grading Really Cost?
Here’s the thing that might surprise you:
The cost of having our technician check factory grading versus creating grading from scratch is almost the same. Why? Because both options require professional, detailed work.
The cost is typically around $300 per style
(Full size range included, depending on complexity)
Investing in proper grading ensures you receive high-quality sewing patterns that are essential for reliable and consistent production.
And let’s be honest, that’s a small price to pay compared to:
- A whole batch of returns
- A faulty size run
- A collection that customers don’t trust
- Thousands lost on remakes or markdowns
You could protect your whole size range for less than the cost of one wrong sample.

Why This Actually Matters for Your Brand’s Future
Good grading:
- Builds consistent fit that customers trust
- Encourages repeat purchases
- Minimises returns
- Strengthens brand identity
- Creates patterns that scale as you grow
This step isn’t optional. It’s essential.
