Starting a Clothing Label in NSW? There’s a $10,000 Grant for That

Create NSW’s Quick Response Fashion Grant offers emerging NSW designers up to $10,000. Here’s who’s eligible, key dates and how to apply.

If you’re building a fashion label in NSW, you can apply for up to $10,000 through the Quick Response Fashion Grant, the NSW fashion grant run by Create NSW. Applications for 2026-27 are open now and close on 19 November 2026.

It’s one of the few grants built specifically for emerging designers, not just small business in general. Below we break down who can apply, what the money covers and how to put together a strong application.

What is the Quick Response Fashion Grant?

It’s a Create NSW program offering up to $10,000 (GST exclusive) to help emerging fashion talent grow their practice or business. The 2026-27 round has a $500,000 pool, expanded after a successful first year that funded more than 30 emerging NSW designers.

Half the pool ($250,000) is set aside for First Nations, Western Sydney and regional NSW applicants. If that’s you, it’s well worth applying.

Applications are assessed in four rounds (called tranches), with decisions made within five weeks of each round closing. That’s quick by grant standards, hence the name.

Who can apply?

The grant is for people and businesses early in their fashion journey. You can apply if you’re:

  • An emerging fashion designer, or fashion and textile practitioner, within your first five years of independent practice
  • An emerging fashion design business

You’ll also need to tick these boxes:

  • Be a company incorporated in Australia, a partnership, or an individual
  • If applying as an individual: be 18+, an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and based in NSW for at least 12 months
  • Have an active ABN with a bank account in the same name
  • Not be insolvent or bankrupt

Tertiary institutions, government agencies and unincorporated associations can’t apply. There’s no minimum turnover, so you don’t need to be selling yet.

What can you spend it on?

You choose one of two categories when you apply.

CategoryWhat it covers
Professional developmentShort courses, competitions, networking events, industry memberships, conferences, art fairs, lookbooks and portfolios, plus related travel and accommodation
EquipmentComputer equipment and software, photography gear, production materials, manufacturing equipment and tools

It won’t cover:

  • Marketing, advertising, social media or branding (lookbooks and portfolios are the exception)
  • Venue hire, event production or catering
  • Loan repayments or existing debts
  • Land or property
  • Activities that are part of a degree
  • Activities that start or finish too close to the round closing date (check the guidelines for your round)

Tip: think about what would move your label forward the most. For many new brands, that’s pattern-making software, production materials for a first sample run, or a professional lookbook to take to buyers.

How to apply

Applications go through Create NSW’s SmartyGrants portal. Have these ready before you start:

  1. A portfolio or examples of recent work
  2. Your CV, bio or business profile
  3. Quotes and supplier details for what you want to buy or attend
  4. Letters of support, if you have them

Assessors score you on three things:

CriteriaWeighting
Fashion experience40%
Impact on your career or business30%
Viability of the activity30%

The big takeaway: be specific. Real quotes, a clear plan and a direct line between the spend and your next step (a first collection, a stockist pitch, a trade show) make a much stronger case than a general wish list.

Questions? Create NSW is on 02 9228 4578 or [email protected], Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Full guidelines, FAQs and a webinar recording are on the program page.
